North Somerset runs from the Bristol Channel to the edge of the Mendips, and it holds two quite different sorts of place. Weston-super-Mare is the largest town, a seaside resort with the pier and the sands and the council’s offices. Portishead, Clevedon and Nailsea face Bristol and empty out towards it every morning. Yatton, Congresbury and Winscombe sit inland between them.
